Big Data
A collection of data sets so large and complex they are difficult to process using the usual database management tools

Blog
Abbreviation for "web log". An online journal or news site

Bluetooth
Technology that allows devices to communicate with each other wirelessly

Broadband
A type of fastest Internet connection

Browser
A programme used to navigate the Internet. Examples include Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer

Clickstreams

Click-through rates
Online sites report how well an ad encourages a user to click, in a statistic called the click-through rate (CTR)

Configure
Adjusting the functions of software or hardware to the particular settings required.

Cookies
Text files generated by websites and stored on your hard disk. It pays to clean them regularly

CPF
Central Provident Fund

Crash
This happens when a programme causes your computer to stop responding

CRM
Customer Relations Management

Cyberspace
The entire range of information resources available through online computer networks

Cybrarian
One who makes a living doing online research and information retrieval

A programme that allows Windows to communicate with a peripheral device

Email
Electronic Mail

Encrypt
To scramble data for security reasons so it can be read by only the sender and authorised recipient.

ERP
Enterprise Resource Planning

Extension
The three-letter code at the end of a filename that indicates the type or format of the file. (e.g. .doc, for a word document)

Firewall
A system that prevents unauthorised access to a computer over a network

Flame War
When an online discussion degenerates into a series of personal attacks

Flash
Application used to create high-quality graphic animations on a website.

File Transfer Protocol. A way of transferring files over the Internet

Hypertext Mark-up Language is used to create pages for a website

Hyperlink
A clickable link on a web page or in a document that takes you elsewhere

A private network inside a company or organization

IP Number
Internet Protocol Number. Every machine that is on the Internet has a unique IP number

Icon
A small image used to identify a file or application.

ISP

Landing Page
The page that is displayed after a user clicks on a link or ad is called a landing page

Linux
An operating system that runs on a variety of computers and can be freely modified and distributed by its users

Learning Management System

Machine to Machine

Macro
An automated series of commands or operations that can be run at any time

Malware
Software that performs harmful or surreptitious acts.

Mashup
A site that automatically combines content from other sources

Meta Tag
A specific kind of HTML tag that contains information in a site's source code and is not normally displayed to the user

Mobile social media
Social media on mobile devices

Mouse Potato
The online generation's answer to the Couch Potato

MP3
A standard for compressing digital audio. Good sound quality that only needs only a fraction of the storage space.

MP4
Commonly used to store digital video and digital audio streams

Multimedia
A combination of recorded audio, video, still images and documents

A citizen of the Internet

Password
Code used to gain access to a locked system

Phishing
Fraudulent e-mails and web sites trying to trick you into revealing your personal details

Ping
To check if a server is running

Podcast
Internet audio broadcast that can be played back

POP
Post Office Protocol used to retrieve e-mail from a mail server

Portal
A site that offers a variety of services in one place

Posting
A message entered into a network communications system e.g. Blog Post

Quick Response Code. A type of matrix barcode with fast readability and large storage capacity

RAM
Random Access Memory. The computer's working area, used for data storage while the PC is switched on

Return On Investment

RSS
Really Simple Syndication. A format for automatically distributing news headlines and other content from the web

SaaS
Software-as-a-service

Search Engine
A site on the Internet that indexes the names and addresses of other sites.

SEM
Search Engine Marketing is a form of internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs)

SEO
Search Engine Optimization. Designing online sites so that they rank highly in search engines

SERPs
Search engine results pages

Server
A computer on a network that stores shared information

Shareware
Free to download software that you pay a fee for if you want to continue using it after the trial period

Social Media
Technologies that mediate human communications. Some of the best known examples include Facebook, Twitter and YouTube

Thumbnail
A small image used to give a quick preview of a larger image

Trojan
A malicious program disguised as a harmless program.

Improve the performance or specification of your computer

URL
Uniform Resource Locator. The unique address of a web page

USB
Universal Serial Bus. Standard that allows the quick and easy connection of external peripherals to a computer

Virus
A malicious computer programme designed to annoy or damage computer data and performance

Wiki

Worm
A malicious code that uses an infected PC to spread itself to others

Zip
Compressed file format to reduce disk space needed by a file and to enable a quick transfer between computers
